They chanted the slogans in Hindi, which clearly expressed their disapproval of the Citizenship Amendment Bill. “CAB se Azaadi (freedom from CAB),” is what the group of students demanded.

They were further seen chanting slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders of Assam. The Cottonians demanded freedom from Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance & Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya.

“Sarbananda se azaadi, Himanta se azaadi, Himanta se azaadi, Siddhartha se azaadi,” chanted the students in the video clip that went viral. The Cotton University students also demanded freedom from Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

It may be mentioned here that the Students’ Union of Cotton University had recently organised Rono Hunkaar or ‘War Cry’ against the contentious Citizenship Bill that is scheduled to be tabled in the Parliament on Monday. Artists and learned, along with students, participated in the ‘War Cry’.

Protests against the Citizenship Bill have intensified in the past few days, especially after the Union Cabinet cleared the Bill on Wednesday. The citizens of Assam and other northeastern states are opposed to the Bill that proposes a path to citizenship to undocumented non-Muslims from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Northeast Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called for a region-wide ‘bandh’ on Tuesday to mark the mass opposition to the CAB. On Tuesday, the Bill will be placed in the Rajya Sabha for its final review.
