Northeast's first COVID19 Super-Speciality Hospital Inaugurated at GMCH with UGVI system from Canada
Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated a COVID-19 super speciality hospital at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital today.
The super specialty hospital, with 180 beds and 60 Intensive Care Units, has the capacity to treat around 200 serious symptomatic patients at once with each bed having its own dedicated supply of medical gas.
Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "glad that the ₹150 crore Centrally funded, 4-floor-236-bed (186 ward, 50 ICU) super speciality block at GMCH is functional and fully converted as a covid19 treatment unit for now".

Labs and operation theatres are available here for patients who require any kind of surgery or treatment alongside COVID19, said Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing media persons after the inauguration.
The hospital has a new Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UGVI) System, which will help in improving indoor air quality and bacteria management. Brought in from Canada, the new system is also being used in AIIMS, New Delhi for treatment of patients, said the minister. UV rays, Sarma mentioned, is very effective with the ability to detect and kill the virus.
Meanwhile, Assam has reported 30 new COVID19 cases taking the total to 910 on May 29, 2020. Out of the 30 patients,16 Golaghat, 6 Karimganj, 2 Lakhimpur, 2 Cachar, 2 Hailakandi, 2 Karbi Anglong.

Of the 910 cases, 103 have been cured or discharged, 800 are active while four died due to the infection and three patients were migrated in Assam.
The novel coronavirus has infected over 1.66 lakh people and claimed over 4706 lives as on May 29, 2020, morning, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. There are 89987 active cases with 71105 cases discharged and cured.
