Margherita, April 3, 2020:

Assam CPI(ML) or the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) has demanded immediate release of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi amid the coronavirus lockdown.

CPI(ML) central committee member and All India Central Council of Trade Unions All India and Assam Secretary Subhas Sen has criticized the State Government for "playing with the life of Akhil Gogoi, who has been afflicted with a number of severe diseases."

"He is being arrested time and again on false and fabricated charges one after another to push him to sure death," said Sen in a statement and added that the State Government was conspiring to signal a hint to other struggling leaders of Assam "so as to establish a fascist regime by turning Assam into a graveyard of democracy."

The CPI (ML) leader, in his statement, reiterated that the Government has put Gogoi behind the bars despite Supreme Court's directive to release all the under trial prisoners.

"Govt., on the contrary, has put Mr Gogoi again in the jail. It is worth condemning for it is playing a dual role and ignoring the Supreme Court of India," Said Sen.

It may be mentioned here that the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Chief has also called upon the authorities to “decongest” the Assam jail facilities, which he claimed are overcrowded.

Gogoi recently said there is a lot of physical contact among the inmates and as many as 4 people sleep under the same mosquito net. This, Gogoi has hinted, could lead to an outbreak of the coronavirus.

Jails should be vacated and the prisoners should be let out on parole Gogoi said, calling forth the jail inmates to begin a protest if things continue in the same vein. Gogoi also said that new people were being jailed everyday, and hinted that an outbreak in the Assam jails could happen in the future.

“They are taking me from one jail to another — from one police station to the next. From December 12 I was kept at the Jorhat CRPF camp. From December 13 I was kept in Jorhat jail. From 16 December, I was taken to Delhi.I was kept in NIA office in Delhi. Then, I was brought again to Assam. I was given to Sivasagar Police custody and then shifted to the Sivasagar jail. Then, a prisoner who had fever, cold arrived and there was a situation of hue and cry in the jail.” Gogoi said that a new case is being registered on charges on him pelting stones at the OC.

It needs mention here that the saga of the peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and his tryst with the Assam Police personnel, who continue to arrest him every time he is closer to scenting the smell of freedom, has been continuing for over 3 months.
