Crops to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore damaged due to floods this year in Assam

The Assam government has informed that crops to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore have been damaged in the state due to floods. Replying to a question by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator Pabindra Deka in the state assembly, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said that crops of around 2.8 lakh hectare of land were damaged due to floods since April this year.

“The exact amount of loss will be known after the disaster management bodies complete the assessment of the damage. However, we guess the loss will be around Rs 1,000 crore,” Bora said. To mitigate the crisis of farmers, three proposals worth Rs 139.64 crore, Rs 45.39 crore and Rs 38.43 crore have been submitted, he added.

The government, however, has not taken any decision on waiving loans taken by farmers, Bora said while replying to a separate query by All India United Democratic Front legislator Sahab Uddin Ahmed.

It may be mentioned that a delegation comprising six-member visited Assam on August 26 to assess the flood situation in the state. The delegation visited all the affected districts and took stock of the situation. The Assam government had sent a interim flood damage report to the central government and sought a relief package of Rs. 2300 crore to compensate the flood damages caused by the catastrophe. The floods had caused huge destruction in the state this year.

It needs mention that Over 56.9 lakh people have been affected in 30 districts of Assam due to floods whereas 113 people have lost their lives this year.
