DC Hailakandi allays fears prior to publication of NRC

Hailakandi, August 29, 2019:

In view of the final publication of NRC on August 31, the Hailakandi district administration sought to allay fears and apprehensions from the minds of the people.

As part of the confidence-building exercise, the Hailakandi  district administration convened a meeting with the leading citizens, political leaders and other stakeholders on Thursday.

Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli made it clear that those who are left out of the final NRC need not have to press the panic button as they would get sufficient time to file a petition before the foreigners' tribunals. She asked everyone to spread the message loud and clear to dispel any doubts and to remain on alert to scotch rumours. Jalli also appealed to the people to remain calm and to extend full cooperation to the administration in maintaining peace and tranquility.

The district administration has even instructed the circle officers to take the people into confidence to remove misgivings and doubts. Awareness meetings are being organized to sensitize the people prior to the publication of the final NRC.

Security has been beefed up at the 57 NRC Seva kendras and in government and circle offices where the final NRC will be on display.

The police administration has been keeping a close eye on trouble mongers and has warned that strict action would be initiated against those spreading misinformation or rumours to disturb the prevailing peace in the district.

Superintendent of Police Pabindra Kumar Nath said the district has been divided into three zones with a DSP put in-charge. Security forces would be adequately deployed. Eight companies of CRPF, besides Assam Police personnel, are deployed in the district. Nath said inputs are being gathered from sensitive areas and security forces would be deployed accordingly. The SP said that posts on social media are being tapped with help from cyber experts. "Thana level meetings are being held regularly with the police and district administrations working in close tandem, " said Nath, adding that the present law and order situation is normal.

The district administration is also monitoring the posts on the social media and anyone posting objectionable posts would be dealt with severely. It has asked people to bring to the notice of the administration any incident for immediate action. At a Press Meet, Deputy Commissioner Jalli sought the support and cooperation of the media persons for smooth and hassle-free publication of the NRC. Jalli said that those whose names do not figure in the final NRC will not be deprived from government benefits unless declared foreigner by foreigners’ tribunal.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem was also present.
