NAHARLAGUN: 'Fridays for Future', an influential organization from the frontier State Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday urged the state's Chief Minister Pema Khandu to ban firecrackers on Diwali 2020.

"We write to you as concerned citizens regarding the upcoming Diwali festival. As you are aware, Diwali is celebrated across the country by the public by bursting an excessive Amount of firecrackers, as part of their cultural ethos. In view of the growing fireworks pollution, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on November 6 issued notices to 18 States

It pointed out that some states like Rajasthan, Odisha, Sikkim, Delhi, West Bengal and Maharashtra have already issued government notices to impose the ban during Diwali 2020 citing reasons for environmental hazards, COVID-related risks etc.

It further pointed out the Rajasthan government announced a penalty of Rs 2,000 on anyone found violating the order.

"There is no need to burst harmful crackers in the name of festivals," it said, adding, "Therefore, it is important for us to realize as responsible human beings, that Diwali the festival of light can be celebrated joyously in an eco-friendly manner."

"While we welcome, public interest initiatives like the Advisory notes issued by Department of Health and Family Welfare and Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board appealing citizens to avoid bursting of crackers, at the same time we would like to urge you for a issuing a total ban on selling/using firecrackers in the ensuing Deepawali for the safety of the animals, environment, children, and COVID-19 patients," it added.
