Guwahati, November 9, 2018:

Elephant invasion has continued to haunt the locals of Numaligarh as a herd of wild elephants has kept on attacking the villagers.

A local speaking on the issue said that earlier the elephants used to come only during night but in the past two days, the herd has been invading even in the day time. The elephants have destroyed several areas of cropland and houses as well. Some people have even lost their lives in the past one month.

The locals are spending sleepless nights and in fear of being "crushed" by the elephants.

The villages which have been "invaded" are Sundarpur, Safela, Dhulaguri, Bakiyal, Naharsala, Fulbari, Murfuloni, Barmohari Pathar and other nearby villages.

It may be mentioned that on November 8, one person was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in Numaligarh’s Haharsola.

A local said that the person who died in the attack has been identified as Habil Guria. He was attacked by the elephants early in the morning while he tried to chase away the herd that invaded the paddy fields and houses in the villages.

There were multiple elephant invasions in the region over the past few days in the area. At least four persons were killed during elephant attacks in the past week as well.

Even though the forest department is trying to keep the elephants out of the villages, there are regular attacks being reported.
