GUWAHATI: Assam Water Resources minister Pijush Hazarika has visited the Kaki area along with Lumding legislator Sibu Mishra, Deputy Commissioner, Superintendant of Police and taken stock of the 'encroached' land yesterday.

As Pijush Hazarika informed, a total of 250 bighas of land were occupied by the illegal encroachers in Kaki.

The houses of 'illegal encroachers' were demolished earlier and the minister has given them a week to harvest their crops.

"There used to be a rubber garden here but encroachers have built 15-16 houses and occupied almost 250 bighas of lands. Unfortunately, they did not only stop there and used the land for farming by cutting down the trees. I condemn this act," said Hazarika speaking with the media persons.

"No matter how hard they try we will not let them settle down here again. How dare they to start farming here by destroying a government garden? They will be given a week to harvest their crops from here. On the eighth day we will be carrying out a complete eviction drive," added Hazarika.

On June 6 this year, the administration has carried out an eviction drive in that same very area. But the government has alleged that the same encroachers have settled down again right after the eviction drive and hence the government this time to handle the matter with iron hands.
