Ex-CM Tarun Gogoi Challenges Amit Shah to Prove Presence of 50 Lakh 'Illegals' in Assam

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) and asked national president Amit Shah to prove that Assam has 50 lakh illegal migrants in Assam.

Addressing the media, Tarun Gogoi appealed for re-verification of the NRC and asked the Supreme Court to give directions in this regard.
Gogoi challenged the BJP government over its statement that ‘50 lakh illegal migrants’ are there in the state. He added, “The state does not even have 10 lakh illegal migrants which the BJP is claiming, and if the BJP proves me wrong I will resign from politics and seek forgiveness.”
He also challenged BJP national president, Amit Shah to prove his statement. He added that the government of India has included the term “Khilanjia” (indigenous) not Assamese which is more complicated to draft in the NRC.
The former CM also accused AMSU of the lapse of its role in the process of NRC.
Gogoi demanded a judicial inquiry into the NRC process that left out the genuine Indian from the final list. He further mentioned that many D- voters have also been included in the NRC.
He added, “Many have committed suicide and many are facing the torture so they need be paid compensation for that. There should be an inquiry to probe the reason behind such a huge anomaly.”
