The last decade of the 20th century witnessed the Bodo agitation in many parts of Assam. Subsequently, the movement resulted in the historic signing of the Bodoland Accord and creation of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). The unity & integrity of Assam, a key pillar of this accord, was recognized while also guaranteeing autonomy for the BTC for the rapid socio-economic and cultural advancement of the Bodo people. The creation of BTC is the result of the sacrifices of these brave-hearts.

While presenting the budget today, Assam Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the people to work together and march hand-in-hand for a progressive, vibrant and united Assam. While paying respect to the brave-hearts of the Bodoland agitation, the state government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives during the Bodoland agitation. The government also made adequate provision for this in the current budget. Dr Sarma said the Prime Minister has said “Good governance with good intentions is the hallmark of our government. Implementation with integrity is our core passion.” Whilst re stating the core principles of this budget, Ekatrikaran, Xomproxaron and Uttoron the government also congratulated each and every Department of the Government, Directorates, District establishments, Autonomous Councils and Societies who have worked tirelessly to translate the policies of this Government into reality.

The Finance Minister also said that the work is far from done; rather it has just started. The bulk of the policies and schemes that that the state government have announced are just beginning to bear fruit and the time is ripe for  to reaffirm and rededicate with renewed vigour and commitment to the work of betterment of the state and the lives of the people.
