“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”: Nelson Mandela
A good educational background is considered absolutely indispensable in this modern world and our country India, through leaps and bounds, in developing exponentially in the education sector. Once upon a time, a person was considered adequately educated if he had a bachelor’s degree, but nowadays, it is not uncommon to come across people holding multiple PhDs. Thus, in this age of information and education, it becomes imperative for us to examine the education level of the leaders of society, the lawmakers. In this particular article, we will examine the education level of Assam’s Lok Sabha MPs as we near the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
National Election Watch, a non-profit NGO has compiled a list of six sitting MPs and their educational qualifications.
Firstly, we come to MP Rameswar Teli (BJP) from Dibrugarh who is a mere 10th standard pass from Tipling Ghat High School in 1989.
Radheshyam Biswas (AIUDF) from Karimganj is a little more accomplished in the educational field as he has passed his 12th standard exams from Karimganj College.
Kokrajhar MP Naba Kumar Sarania (independent candidate), on the other hand, somehow scraped through the 12th standard as he secured third division marks in both his 10th and 12th standards.
Meanwhile, National Election Watch state coordinator and founder of North East social trust, Tasaduk Ariful Hussain, has stressed the need for the public to know the educational backgrounds of the candidates. Speaking exclusively to InsideNE, he said: “We got the information from the nomination filings in an affidavit prior to contesting the elections in 2014. Moreover, there are educational criteria for contesting the Panchayat elections, so should the MPs not be held to the same standards?”
