Exempt only Upper Assam from Purview of 'CAA': Gauhati University Professor Sparks Controversy

Guwahati, December 29, 2019:

Noted intellectual and Gauhati University Professor Nani Gopal Mahanta has landed in the soup after he referred to a few districts in Upper Assam as “proper Assam” in a local television channel.

Mahanta, furthermore, demanded the exemption of 10-12 Upper Assam districts from the purview of the 'CAA'.

While explaining the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and its impact on Assam, Mahanta termed the districts of Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Charaideo, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Kaliabor as “proper Assam”, sending viewers into a tizzy.

The video of Nani Gopal Mahanta making these controversial statements at the popular TV show went viral and irked the viewers, especially the people belonging to Lower Assam towns and districts.

He said, “Can we do this? The proper Assam that has Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Charaideo, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Kaliabor and the ones in between should be out of the purview of CAA.”'
