Hailakandi, July 5, 2019:

A fake prescription racket has been busted in Hailakandi district of Assam.

Assistant Commissioner, Mongve Engti conducted a raid with police personnel at Priyobola Medical Store and seized scores of fake prescriptions of SK Roy Civil Hospital Wednesday.

An FIR was lodged by the hospital authorities against the owner of the pharmacy, Biswajit Debnath. The police arrested Debnath and produced him in the district and session court which remanded him to police custody Thursday.

Meanwhile, health authorities reveal that the prescription racket came to light when the father of an infant named Ali Hussain aged one and a half years and resident of Gharmura met a middleman who asked him to approach the owner of the pharmacy.

The owner of the pharmacy Debnath asked him to meet a doctor of the hospital with a photocopy of the prescription. The said doctor prescribed medicine and X-Ray on the Photostat prescription for the ailing infant.

It was in the X-Ray ward a radiologist noticed irregularity on seeing the photostat copy of the prescription and immediately brought the matter to the notice of the hospital superintendent, Dr Sudip Kumar Chakraborty. The hospital authorities swung into action and lodged an FIR against the owner of the pharmacy leading to his arrest.

As the racket is considered to be just the tip of the iceberg, the health authorities of SK Roy Civil Hospital have instituted an inquiry to find out if an unholy nexus exists between some employees of the hospital and racketeers-middlemen.

Meanwhile, show cause notices have been served on employees manning the reception counter Thursday asking them to explain within 72 hours as to why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them for the fake prescription scandal.
