Tinsukia, July 1, 2019:

The Tinsukia district police from Doomdooma Police Station and the 23 Punjab Battalion Army arrested two extortionists for extorting money in the name of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) early in the morning on Monday.

A 7.65 pistol, 2 magazines and 3 rounds of ammunition were recovered and seized from the individuals who were allegedly involved in extortion activities in the name of ULFA (I).

The apprehendees have been identified as Sanjay Yadav (40), and Rahul Chauhan (29), who are both residents of Tinsukia district of Assam.

It may be mentioned that two 'real' United Liberation Front of Assam, Independent (ULFA-I) cadres were arrested by the troops of Assam Rifles from Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday evening.

The duo were apprehended by the Assam Rifles after they had sneaked in from their base in Myanmar.

The duo have been identified as Nayan Jyoti Nath of Tezpur and Manesho Ali of Chabua in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

During preliminary interrogations carried out by the security forces, the cadres had admitted that they had to flee towards India after their camps were run over by the Myanmar army (also known as the ‘Tatmadaw’) sometime ago.

Reports suggest that the insurgent groups ULFA (I) and NDFB (S) might be on its last legs in Myanmar and the cadres stationed in Myanmar are desperate for the feel of familiar Assamese soil under their feet.
