Final draft of NRC to be published on May 31: Prateek Hajela

Guwahati, February 23, 2018:

The final draft of National Register of Citizens(NRC) will be published on May 31. Talking to InsideNE, state coordinator, NRC, Assam Prateek Hajela said that the verification process which had started on 1st September 2015 is still on.

Hajela said that 2500 NRC offices have been set up and 2700 officers engaged along with supporting staff in the whole process. He also said that during the verification process, it was found that around 47 lakh applicants had discrepancies in their NRC legacy data. These people have been served with notices and they will have to come to the NRC centers for re-verification.

Hajela added that the people who were served with notices will have to provide a valid proof of the legacy data that they submitted. It needs to be mention that the Supreme Court of India had set May 31 as the deadline for publication of the final draft of NRC.

It may be mentioned that the part draft of the NRC (National Register of Citizens) for Assam was released past midnight of December 31, 2018, with the names of 1.9 crores, while another 1.39 crore applicants are still to be verified.

The NRC has been updated in Assam for the first time since 1951 with the aim to get rid of illegal foreigners who entered from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971.
