Guwahati, January 18, 2019:

An FIR has been lodged against Assam political stalwart Himanta Biswa Sarma by the Barpeta District Youth Congress (BDYC) over alleged communal remarks he had made at a talk show on January 16. Anuwarul Islam Khan, President of the body, has alleged that Biswa Sarma has made “unconstitutional, communal, false and illegal statements.”

The body has slammed the Minister for making “nonsense” statements against the Muslim community and cited two reasons for filing the FIR.

“Firstly, 90 thousand Bangladeshi Muslim foreigners are living in the 45 no. Baghbar L.A.C but the NRC has already included almost 95% people of Baghbar L.A.C. How a dignified Cabinet Minister made a nonsense statement against the Muslim community?” the FIR read.

Secondly, the youth Congress organization slammed him for claiming that Moinbara Satra had been shifted to Sorbhug due to aggression shown by local Muslims and claimed that it had actually been moved due to erosion of one part of the satra due to the Brahmaputra.

With this, the anti Citizenship (Amendment) Bill seems to have found another target and this time, it is none other than Assam Finance Minister and NEDA Chief Himanta Biswa Sharma. After Chief Minister Sonowal’s symbolic title of ‘Jitaya Nayak’ had been snatched away from him by people angry over the proposed Bill (with many now calling him ‘Jatiya Khalnayak’), it was only a matter of time before the other prominent BJP minister, Sarma, faced the wrath of the anti-Bill movement.

Himanta Biswa Sarma has also come under heavy attack today from prominent leader of opposition Pradyut Bordoloi, who has called him the “new Jinnah” of Assam.
