Flood Death Toll Rises to 60 in Assam

Guwahati, July 21, 2019:

The flood in Assam continues to cause devastation across the State. The death toll has risen to 60, and as of now, over 44 lakh people have been affected by the floods.

As per the latest update by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the water levels in some districts have been receding. As on July 20, a total of 3,024 villages in 77 revenue circles of 24 districts' i.e. Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, KarbiAnglong, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar, and Karimganj are having flood waters affecting a population of 44, 08,142 as on date.

A total of 12 persons have lost their lives due to flood in the districts of Nalbari (1), Barpeta (3), Dhubri (1), Morigaon (5) and South Salmara (2) in last 24 hours. In this season, the total loss of human lives has risen to 60 persons in flood and 2 persons in a landslide.

Meanwhile, Governor of Assam, Jagdish Mukhi along with Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Assam visited Dhubri on Saturday and made an aerial survey of Kamrup, Goalpara, South Salmara, and Dhubri districts along with the officials namely Commissioner, Lower Assam Division and Additional Secretary, Revenue and DM Department. He met the camp inmates of 3 Relief Camps in Gouripur and Dhubri and instructed District officials to render all possible help to the flood-affected people.

Presently, 689 Relief Camps are operational in the districts of Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, KarbiAnglong, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar and Karimganj districts with 1,31,586 inmates and 240 Relief Distribution Centres in the districts of Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon and Golaghat.

The water level of Rivers at 'Danger Level' are as follows: Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Goalpara and Dhubri; Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat)and Kopili at Dharamtul (Nagaon).
