Guwahati, June 4, 2019:

Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said High Court even Supreme Court should strictly monitor the activities of Foreigner’s Tribunals to stop unnecessary harassment of genuine Indian citizens.

Condemning the incidents of wrongful confinement of genuine Indians in Assam, Gogoi questioned the role of Human Rights Commission.

“I don’t know whether Human Rights Commission exists in our country or not,” an exasperated Gogoi said.

The former CM also demanded punishment of the erring officials for wrongful confinement of genuine Indians.

He said allegations of corruptions are there against the Foreigners Tribunal.

“If this is the situation then how people will keep faith on FT. HC should see whether FTs have properly checked the documents,” he added.

Spewing venom at the BJP, Gogoi said instead of driving out the foreigners the government machineries are driving out the genuine Indians.

According to him, the Hindu Bengalis voted en masse to BJP but the party is committing atrocities on this community by sending them to detention camps.

“They promote the agenda of Hindutva but commit atrocities on Hindu Bengalis,” Gogoi said.

Talking about the wrongful confinement of retired Army Captain Md Sanaullah, Gogoi criticized the Assam government for not initiating any step for his release and thereby violating the rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

“Tomorrow is Eid but he is in detention camp. It is very unfortunate,” Gogoi said. Gogoi also lamented that the NRC will be "wastepaper" and further added that the current Govt. is not giving due importance to SC instruction.
