Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi to Fight against C(A)A in Supreme Court as Lawyer

Guwahati, December 17, 2019:

Three-time former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, will take the fight against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act to the Supreme Court as a lawyer.

He will be seen in the black and white lawyer's suit after a long period. The former CM has decided to fight the legal battle himself on behalf of the people of Assam.

Gogoi informed the media persons here today that he would fight the legal battle against the Bill-turned-Act in the apex court along with former Finance Minister, P Chidambaram.

It may be mentioned here that this will be Tarun Gogoi's first legal battle against the central government's move regarding the enactment of legislation in Assam.

The veteran Congress leader informed the media that he bought lawyer's robes today in preparation for the battle ahead. The hearing of the petitions filed against the C(A)A will begin from December 18. The petition filed by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will also be heard tomorrow.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act has been the major concern among the people of India lately. It triggered widespread protests across the country as well as abroad. The Indian diaspora also expressed their disapproval of the C(A)A, following its passage in the Rajya Sabha. Assam has been at the forefront of the battle against the legislation.
