Former Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia has been elected as the 103rd president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha on Thursday, January 2.
Saikia won the position with 269 votes held at Hojai during the executive meeting of the literary body today. He will assume office for a two-year term in the next biennial session of the Sabha to be held soon. As many as seven candidates filed their nomination for the post of president.

Kuladhar Saikia retired as Director-General of Assam police on August 31, 2018 and served an extension of a three-month service. He was an IPS officer (1985 batch).
Saikia studied at Delhi School of Economics and did Ph.D. in economics of crime from IIT Guwahati. He is a Fulbright fellow from Pennsylvania State University and former consultant at World Bank at Washington DC.
On the other hand, writer Mrinalini Devi has been elected as the vice-president of the apex literary body securing 308 votes. She is the mother of Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Whereas, Mrinalini Devi's opponents Dr. Basanta Kumar Sarma ranked 2nd with 152 votes while Padumi Gogoi and Rati Mohan Nath secured 96 and 63 votes respectively.

Meanwhile, Jadhab Chandra Sharma has been elected as the new general secretary (323 votes) against his rivals Debojit Borah who got 255 votes and Hirendra Kalita (36 votes).
