Taking a dig on the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) forming a political party state Health & Family Welfare, Finance, Education minister Himanta  Biswa Sarma said it is a common phenomenon that new political parties are formed before every election. AASU, AJYCP forming the Asom Jatiya Parishad is nothing new and it happens before every election.

Sarma said that the new political party floated by AASU and AJYCP will not get more than 700-1500 votes in every constituency they contest in the 2021 state assembly elections. He asked the people not to blame him of doing any magic if this comes true.

Sarma asked the people of the state how they know that the students leaders are really against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. Sarma also lamented the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) raising funds from the public in the name of forming political parties. Sarma said this should be immediately stopped.

Earlier in the day, the AASU and AJYCP floated a political party under the name ‘Asom Jatiya Parishad’. The convenor of the party Basanta Deka announced this in a press conference in Guwahati.

Names of several district level party leaders were also announced in the press conference. Former minister Jagadish Bhuyan is also an member of the new party.

Sources claimed that the political party to be launched by the AASU and AJYCP is likely to contest 80-100 seats in the assembly elections in Assam due early next year. Though the AASU and AJYCP will not forge any pre-poll alliance with the Congress or be part of its proposed ”Grand Alliance”, it is open for an understanding with the KMSS.

The election to the 126-member Assam assembly is likely to be held in March-April next year. The 2016 elections gave a fractured mandate and no party has an absolute majority in the current House.
