Four picnickers from Jorhat feared drowned in the Brahmaputra

The four feared drowned are stated to be from one family, but police is yet to confirm it

JORHAT: Four picnickers from Jorhat, including two children, are feared drowned in the Brahmaputra at Baghmara under Pulibor police station, near here.

Police said about 10 to 12 picnickers from Jorhat town was taking a ride on a country boat that capsised in the Brahmaputra.

The boatman and other occupants swum to the bank to save themselves, but the four were stated to be missing. They are feared drowned, police said.

“The others are traumatized and are not able to talk. So, we have not been able to ascertain the names of the four persons as of now,” a police officer said, adding that although some have stated the four to be from one family, it was yet to be ascertained.

The picnic spot is a new one and is frequented by many this winter.

Police station said a team rushed to the spot the moment they were informed about the incident by a member of a village defense party (VDP). Police also claimed to have intimated the SDRF immediately.

A team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has launched a search operation for the bodies.
