Free & Fast Wi-Fi in 370 stations under NFR

GUWAHATI: As a part of India’s policy towards Digitalization, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) now provides “free and fast” Wi-Fi to passengers at 370 stations. The provision of free Wi-Fi is expected to provide a great leap towards the country’s goal of a Digital India.

Of the 370 stations, 213 are in Assam, 94 in West Bengal, 35 in Bihar, 20 in Tripura, 3 in Arunachal Pradesh, 2 in Nagaland and one each in Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram.

The majority of district and sub-division headquarters that have railway stations within NFR jurisdiction have now been provided with free Wi-Fi network apart from other important stations, said a release from NFR.

NFR through its social media handle informed that the Railway passengers can now easily purchase UTS tickets from these stations by using Mobile Apps. They can also avail various facilities / get required information while on railway stations free of cost.

Earlier, Initially, Wi-Fi services at some railway stations were provided through collaboration of RailTel and Google in first phase where RailTel provided high speed end to end network connectivity on Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) & Google provided Radio access network equipment along with technology support. Later on, free Wi-Fi at stations was provided under Corporate Social Responsibility by M/s Tata Trust.
