Students of Gauhati University on Satuday staged a silent protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act that recently was passed in both Houses of the Indian Parliament, recently.
The protest, that was spearheaded by the Post Graduate Students' Union (PGSU), saw active participation from a large number of students, who staged cultural performances to condemn the C(A)A. Some creative paintings were drawn by some students, whereas others recited poems to express their sorrow.
Later, the students also staged a mock funeral of four leaders - Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Atul Bora, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- whom they hold responsible for the C(A)A.
Today, as a mark of protest against the controversial legislation, students of the University have carried out a procession to Maligaon area, and will soon return to the University.
This is a marked departure from the last several days of protests, which have seen incidents of violence being reported from across Assam, with anti-CAB protesters being accused of destroying public property.
Reacting to the reports of vandalism carried out by students of GU, Rahul Deka, a Mass Communication student studying under the University, said, “These reports are as of yet unverified. The protesters who did stop cars and create a ruckus at 7-Mile area have been identified as former students.”
Rahul also informed that the University premises is slowly returning to a state of normalcy after many days of protests and agitations. “Although a tense atmosphere pervades still, a return to normalcy is palpable”, he added.
It may be mentioned that the students of the University have played an active role in the protests against the controversial CAA, with many of them even resolving to fight against it in letters etched with their own blood.
Apart from Gauhati University, many other Universities across the State have also seen similar protests, with Tezpur and Dibrugarh University students too staging massive agitations against the CAA.
