The Assam Sahitya Sabha and Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha of Assam, in collaboration with Bodo Sahitya Sabha, have organized a “Gono Abosthan” at Lakhidhar Bora Kshetra at Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati.
The programme has been organized in demand of immediate withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016; prohibit the inclusion of six communities as Scheduled Tribes of Assam (Amendment Bill, 2019) that is expected to affect the existing indigenous scheduled tribes and immediate implementation of language policy in Assam.
It may be mentioned that the decision of the Central Government to amend the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and to give ST status to the six indigenous communities of Assam namely Tai Ahom, Chutia, Tea tribes, Kochari, Moran and Mottock has led to a situation of unrest in the state with conflicts arising between existing STs and ST seekers apart from the protests against the Bill which have rocked the Northeast region.
