New Delhi, February 29, 2020:

Putting aside all the speculations, the Government has given a nod to the delimitation exercise in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland citing improvement in the law and order situation in the states since February, 2008, when the order was deferred.

Delimitation exercise allows for readjustment of assembly seats and boundaries of the parliamentary constituencies. The exercise in these four states was earlier postponed because of serious law and order situations.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a notification citing, “And whereas the Delimitation Commission completed the delimitation exercise and the Delimitation Order, 2008 in respect of all States, except Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland, was published on 26th November, 2008.”

It stated that the delimitation exercise was postponed “on being satisfied that a situation had arisen where the unity and integrity of India was likely to be threatened and there was serious threat to the peace and public order.”

Citing that there has been significant improvement in the security situation in the State of Assam and “reduction in insurgency incidents and improvement in law and order of these States making the situation conducive for carrying out the delimitation exercise which was deferred in the State in the year 2008. Therefore, it appears that the circumstances that led to the deferring of the delimitation exercise in the State of Assam have ceased to exist and that the delimitation of the constituencies as envisaged under the Delimitation Act, 2002 could be carried out now.”
