UDALGURI: Security personnel fired rubber bullets in the Kalaigaon Constituency under the Udalguri district after a scuffle at a polling booth following allegations of 'irregularities' in the process.

Four persons were injured and they have all been shifted to the GMCH in Guwahati for treatment.

According to locals, the violence took place after allegations of discrepancies in the voting process at the Rajapukhuri Habi polling booth.

This led to a hue-and-cry in the minority-dominated area and a scuffle broke out in the area.

Ainuddin Ahmed, a student leader from the region, said: "After the completion of the polling, the seal and signatures of the polling personnel were reportedly not done. Locals also claimed that the EVM voting machine was also not turned off properly. The locals grew irate after reports of irregularities surfaced and got into a heated argument with the presiding offers. The military, however, started baton charging them and eventually resorted to firing."

Thirty-nine of the 126 Assembly constituencies voted on Thursday, with the electoral fate of 345 candidates, including 26 women aspirants, to be decided. Among those who cast their votes was Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF, which is contesting the polls in alliance with the Congress.
