Guwahati, July 10, 2019:

Taking a stand for the environment, Assam's GDD Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya on Tuesday had launched Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) flying squads for checking the 'littering' in the metropolis.

As per the Minister, the squads, comprising multi-tasking workers, will penalize people found littering on road, pavements or other public places.

Altogether six flying squads have been deployed across the city. One segment under a GMC division will be visited by a flying squad every day and on Sundays, the focus will be on resolving the backlog cases.

Bhattacharya has said that if anyone is found littering in public places, the squads will take action against the defaulters as per the provisions of the law and also appealed to people not to dump garbage in public places.

Moreover, he appealed the people to segregate degradable and biodegradable wastes so that it can be disposed of properly and recycled.

It may be mentioned that about 500 tonnes of garbage is produced in Guwahati every day and the GMC is having to deal with protests at the current dumping site near the Ramsar site 'Deepor Beel' as locals have not taken too kindly to the significant site being promoted. In fact, Inside Northeast too has stated a campaign #LetsSaveDeepor Beel to make an appeal to the people to save this site of great ecological importance

GMC officials said the squads will penalize or seize materials stacked on pavements and

roadside. Besides, those found using plastic or any kind of plastic material which is banned will be fined. Moreover, the GMC will carry out a awareness campaign on waste management and disposal of garbage from July 13 to July 31.
