Guwahati Municipal Corporation Flying Squads Facing Challenges due to a Lack of Workers: GMC Commissioner

Guwahati, July 30, 2019:

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) that has floated six flying squads to look after cleaning of garbage and clogged drains in the city against 31 municipal wards containing six divisions, is now facing challenge due to unavailability of workers.

The flying squad of the GMC was floated on July 9, 2019.

Speaking exclusively to Inside Northeast, Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Debeswar Malakar, said, “We are going to inaugurate new flying squads which will help GMC to work faster for garbage and waste management. The first team will work from 6am to 1pm and second team will work from 1pm to 8pm. They will look after every problem and frequently report to us.”

He added, “The population in the city is very dense and in comparison to that, the number of workers is less and frequent cleaning is not feasible.”

Malakar added that these squads have been given the independence to charge penalty for dumping garbage in public and violating any rules set by the GMC.

Each of the squads has six labourers and a supervisor. Each of the squad has an engineering division and a vehicle for carrying out the job assigned to it smoothly.

“Now, the GMC members are collecting the photo complaints and registering these in a log sheet. Later the GMC will award Rs. 500 to those who have sent the picture complaint along with the garbage thrower and Rs.100 to those who send pictures of garbage without details.” he further added.
