Guwahati picnicker who fell off a boat into the Brahmaputra remains untraced

GUWAHATI: In a tragic incident reported from Guwahati, Assam, a youth who had gone for a picnic with friends fell into the Brahmaputra river and drowned. His body is yet to be traced.

Shiva Lahkar, 30, from Kamakhya Gate, Guwahati, who went for a picnic at Mariyapatti, Amingaon with friends, has reportedly drowned after falling into the Brahmaputra river on January 11, 2021.

"The youth went for a boat ride along with 6 of his other friends. The boat started sinking in the middle of the river," Sub-Inspector Mukut Baishya of the Amingaon Police Station confirmed to Inside Northeast.

Although his other friends managed to swim to the river bank, Lahkar has not been found to date, the officer said.

The police and SDRF teams reached the spot immediately after the complaint was filed and started the rescue operation.

"The SDRF team's rescue mission is still going on," SI Baishya informed Inside Northeast.
