Guwahati, October 13, 2018:

The Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden, widely known as Guwahati Zoo, will soon get a pair of ostriches for display.

Divisional Forest Officer, Tejas Mariswamy, said after almost 20 years, the zoo would have ostriches for display. The Central Zoo Authority has approved the exchange programme between the Bhagwan Borsa Biological Park and Assam State Zoo.

Mariswamy said the Guwahati Zoo would give one male black panther and three leopards in exchange of the ostriches and a pair of striped hyenas. The exchange is likely to take place in the first half of November.

The zoo is also expected to get some Lady Amherst’s pheasants, golden pheasants and silver pheasants. These birds will be brought from Darjeeling and the exchange is expected to take place later this month. At present, there are about 1,100 animals at Guwahati Zoo.
