Hagrama giving arms to youths to create unrest in BTR: Promod Boro in Modi rally

KOKRAJHAR: Promod Boro, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Region today accused his predecessor Hagrama Mohilary of giving arms to the youths of the state to create further unrest in the strife-torn region.

"It is unfortunate that BPF and Hagrama together with Badruddin Ajmal want to foment unrest in the region. They want to disrupt the peace in the region by handing arms to some youths and make them fight. However, we don't want any kind of bloodshed or violence in the region," he said against the backdrop of the re-emergence of insurgency in the Bodo-dominated belt of Assam.

Boro credited the prime minister Narendra Modi-led government for ushering in peace" to the Bodo-dominated belt.

Addressing the prime minister, he said, "Before you came here, there was unrest here, misunderstandings were there, the problem of insurgency was there. The previous administration was beset by corruption, misrule, and was spreading problems among the people. After you came here, we are starting to feel that there is an actual government here."

Turning down heavily against the 'Mahajot', Boro said that their leaders -- such as Badruddin Ajmal and Hagrama Mohilary -- are "incapable of leading Assam."

Seeking the prime minister's blessings, Bodo exuded hope that after the fulfillment of the BTR pact, and the construction of the medical college, engineering college, NIT, in all the states, the region will be one of the most highly developed areas in all of Northeast India.

Modi, taking to the stage, called for "peace" and appealed to the insurgents operating in Assam to give up their arms and return to the mainstream.

An armed outfit named National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) -- supposedly led by the dreaded insurgent M Batha -- has made its presence known and urged people to boycott the BJP in the forthcoming polls.

The insurgent group has called an Assam bandh today in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to here.

A media intimation, signed by B Bungtigwra of the armed outfit, has called an “Assam/Bodoland bandh” tomorrow. However, the duration has not been mentioned.

“Hope this will be observed very strictly, or else anything may happen and if so, the Authorities will be responsible,” the intimation added.

Meanwhile, Assam's Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also said that Hagrama will be jailed if found to be "encouraging" Batha's return to the underground. He has also said that the case could be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further investigations.

Reacting to these accusations, Congress wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner of India seeking a blanket ban on Himanta Biswa Sarma from campaigning in the Assam elections for making “open public threats” against BPF supremo Hagrama Mohilary.
