GUWAHATI: In yet another major blow to the Assam Congress its ally Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has shown their allegiance to Bharatiya Janata Party. Party insiders say, if the BPF can show a majority on the secret ballot process in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls, then the chances of Hagmara Mohilary replacing present BTC Chief Promod Bodo is quite high.

The BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary has been in discussion with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for making an arrangement for ‘secret ballot’ voting during the floor test in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) to prove the party’s majority. In the last BTC polls, BPF emerged as the single largest party by winning the majority of seats.

"Our party Chief Hagrama Mohilary and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma are holding discussions. Our whole negotiation is about Gauhati High Court's judgment on the secret ballot process to prove our majority in the assembly. If the state government gives nod to that then the Governor will allow us to prove our majority in the house too," said BPF senior leader and legislator Durga Das Boro.

In the last BTC polls, BPF emerged as the single largest party by winning the majority of seats.

"It is known that BPF can prove their majority in the house. BPF's political fate is controlled by the people of BTC. If we come to a position in BTC from where we can work for the betterment of them and regarding quitting the grand-alliance and come with the BJP, if Assam CM puts forward any such proposal definitely we will look into it," Boro added.

Mohilary led BPF had never been out of power in the BTR in the last 17 years until BJP, the former alliance of BPF, ousted them with the help of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) in the last Bodoland Territorial Council polls.

Since then Hagrama Mohilary has been eager to get back in power again and joined Congress-led grand-alliance in the hope to be a kingmaker so they can regain BTR as well. But BPF could not perform well in the assembly polls and grand-alliance failed to oust BJP again.

A split between the BPF and Congress-led grand-alliance was visible right after the assembly polls and the Grand Alliance did not perform up to the mark.
