Silchar (Assam), 2 Aug 2018

High drama was witnessed at Kumbhirgram airport here on Thursday afternoon after an eight-member delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) was not allowed to leave after having arrived here from Kolkata on a two-day visit to assess the situation in Assam following publication of the complete NRC draft.

The delegation members comprising TMC MPs and MLAs, besides a West Bengal Minister, had a heated exchange with security forces at the airport after not being allowed to leave for the town.

The delegation alleged that some of its members were physically assaulted by the security personnel deployed at the airport.

TMC leader Derek O Brian called the situation “super emergency”.

“They didn’t allow our MPs and MLAs to leave the airport. Our chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, who is a heart patient and has a pacemaker, was roughed up by the police. What is going on? They did not go there to break the law. They are lawmakers and not law breakers. This is super emergency,” he alleged.

Fearing trouble, the Cachar district administration had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC.

Huge number of security forces has been deployed near the airport to avert any trouble.
