UDALGURI: AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal, continuing the war of words with the BJP leadership ahead of the high-stakes election in Assam, branded chief minsiter Sarbananda Sonowal as the 'father of Moulabadi' and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as 'grandfather of moulabadi' during an angry outburst.

Asked about his response to Sonowal's branding of the AIUDF as a 'Moulabadi party', Ajmal said, "He (Sonowal) is the father of Moulabadis, while Himanta Biswa Sarma is the grandfather of Moulabadi."

Continuing in the same vein, Ajmal said that Himanta Biswa Sarma has escalated his attacks on the party are a result of his "fear" of losing the forthcoming election.

"Moulabadi" is a pejorative term used to refer to Islamic fundamentalists in Assam.

Painting a grim picture for the future of the BJP, Ajmal said, "It will first be ousted from Assam, then from Bengal, then from Kerala, and then from all of India. In fact, the process of ouster has already begun in Assam."

Campaigning for the Bodoland People's Front in the Udalguri district of BTR, Ajmal had said that they should vote against the BJP-led coalition to ensure that Sarbananda Sonowal does not become the chief minister once again.

Both the Ajmal-led AIUDF and the Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF are a part of the 'grand alliance' stitched together with the exclusive purpose to defeat the BJP during the Assembly polls.

The Congress-led grand alliance or ‘Mahajath’ comprises the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI (M), the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) Liberation or CPI(ML), and the Anchalik Gana Marcha (AGM).

The Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) has also broken away from the BJP-led alliance to join the ‘Mahajath’.

Assembly elections for 126 seats in Assam will be held in three phases starting from March 27 and the counting of votes will take place on May 2.
