Himanta Biswa Sarma announces historic steps to revamp Assam police force

GUWAHATI: Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced a set of reforms in a bid to strengthen and modernize the state police force.

Sarma today took part in a conference with all the Superintendents "capable" and "professional" police force and resolved to continue these meets to address various issues.

The conference with the SPs will be held every 6 months, Sarma said, adding that the next iteration of the conference in Duliajan towards the end of the year.

Himanta Biswa Sarma has also announced that a similar conference of Deputy Commissioners will also be held semi-anually. The first of these will be held between August 15-30 in Diphu, Karbi Anglong.

Apart from these, both SPs and DCs will come together for meetings in Guwahati to discuss several issues, Sarma added.

Biswa Sarma has also announced the formation of ten more Commando Battalions to keep the peace in volatile areas.=

"In volatile places along the Assam-Nagaland border, along sensitive areas in Tinsukia, in BTR, and hills areas we will deploy these commandos who will be comparable to the National Security Guard (NSG)," Sarma added.

Sarma also confirmed that Assam government will begin a recruitment process for police personnel as there seems to be a lack of personnel at the present moment.

Sub-inspectors, commando battalions, and 'manpower' to discharge duty at the police stations will be recruited within the year, Sarma added.

The Chief Minister also announced that the government will set up seven Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) labs to help the police in its fight against drugs.

Further, all jawans serving in battalions will get 30 days off every single year so as to be able to spend time with their families.

Sarma also announced that all police personnel will receive a free health check-up every year.

"Prudent policing is the backbone of good governance which also plays the role of a catalyst in propelling development.'

Addressing a day-long conference of the Superintendents of Police of the state in Kaziranga on Wednesday CM Sarma urged upon the SPs to be more prudent to enable policing to get into the root of any crime to facilitate expeditious delivery of justice.

During the daylong deliberations, CM Sarma while reviewing the law and order prevailing in the state also took stock of the internal security issues which have greater ramifications on the peace and prosperity of the state including a skilled and professional intelligence gathering system.

The Chief Minister during the conference also harped on the importance of robust strategies for stopping the commission of crimes and performing well-researched, exhaustive and intelligent investigations.
