Assam’s Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has become notorious for making communal statements, has again landed in controversy after comparing Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s rally to an ‘Ijtema’ (an Islamic congregation).
Biswa Sarma, who has often said remarked that the Congress party only represents the interests of the Muslim community in the state, said that young Prince of Congress politics merely arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday to inaugurate the ‘Ijtema’.
“What happened yesterday was not a public meeting, but rather, a religious Ijtema. Rahul came here, inaugurated the Ijtema, and left”, Biswa Sarma said. He also questioned the Congress promises made by Gandhi in case the party is able to win the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “Anyone can make promises”, the Finance Minister scoffed. Gandhi has promised to restore ‘special status’ to Assam and also bring back the ‘Investment Promotion Policy’ as well as ‘North East Industrial Policy’.
It is to be mentioned that the Congress party kickstarted its Lok Sabha campaign in the state when the Congress Party President arrived in the Guwahati to address a large gathering of supporters.
