Senior BJP leader and State Health and Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked that "Rajiv Bhawan", which is the office of Assam Congress will be renamed as "Ajmal Bhawan" in lieu of the pre-election links between Congress and AIUDF. Responding to the remark, senior Congress legislator and Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabarata Saikia responded to Himanta Biswa Sarma's comments where he accused of leaving Congress "to escape from scam charges levelled against him".
"Usually majority is formed with popular support from MLAs and earlier Himanta Biswa Sarma couldn't be CM although he wanted to and to avoid scam charges levelled against him, he left the Congress for the BJP", said Saikia.

On the issue of other statements such as Congress is a Muslim party, Saikia responded by saying, "I don't know what to say but in politics. However, he came to my constituency with no information during January which is a traditional thing to do is to inform the local MLA. Now, Himanta Biswa is making these light-hearted statements like Congress is only for Muslims. But I am Hindu and we have all kinds of leaders. He also said AGP Ambari office should be a Wedding Hall although that party has been used to rule in the state by the BJP".
Debabrata Saikia is the current Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Saikia was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011 from Nazira constituency and retained his seat in 2016. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Assam, Hiteswar Saikia.
