Historic Day for Assam: CM Sonowal after 644 Rebels Surrender Arms

Guwahati, January 23, 2020:

As many as 644 rebels on Thursday laid down their arms in a arms surrender ceremony held at the GMCH auditorium in presence of the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, 4 days ahead of Republic Day celebrations in the country.

According to reports, 50 cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), 8 cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, 6 cadres of the Kamatapur Liberation Organization, 13 cadres of the Rava National Liberation Front, 1 cadre of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), 87 cadres of the National Santhal Liberation Army, 178 cadres of the Adivashi Dragon Fighter, and 301 cadres of the National Liberation Front of Bengal laid down their arms in a glittering ceremony attended by several dignitaries.

“Today, the militants have laid down their arms in front of the Chief Minister....AK-47, HK, MQ, along with hard-crafted weapons have been submitted…each firearm is important for us, as only a single bullet is required to take a life”, said top cop Hiren Chandra Nath, the in-charge of surrender and rehabilitation of militants.

The Chief Minister, speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony, said that this augurs well for the peace-loving people of the state, since 644 militants have returned to the mainstream and given up their arms to the Government. We had promised this to the public in 2016...even people wanted that the state should become free from terrorists, corruption, foreigners, pollution under the BJP coalition Government.

"Because of the people's effort this is happening", the Chief Minister said, adding that the Government is planning to rehabilitate the militants after their surrender and make them independent. "In the near future....as you know...through Swalamban, we have already given support to many surrendered militants to earn their livelihood with dignity and pride and prestige.."
