Hooch tragedy of Assam: Death toll rises to 102

Guwahati, February 23, 2019:

In the latest reports, the death toll of drinking spurious liquor in Golaghat has reached 102 as of now and steadily increasing in Jorhat and Golaghat district of Assam.

The spurious liquor that is consumed by the tea garden workers to get rid of the day-long exhaustion of their work has turned out to be a poison that has claimed the life of 102 of tea garden workers and locals in the district.

It may be mentioned that more than 200 people have been admitted at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) and Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh.

The Assam government banned ‘lali gur’ (jaggery/liquid), a substance used to make illicit liquor on Saturday following the incident. The license was given for this liquor as it was given to cows, but later people started using it to manufacture the spurious liquor for marketing purposes and consumed by humans.
