Guwahati, February 4, 2019:

Indigenous communities of Northeast India have been protesting the amendment of the Citizenship Act (1955) ever since PM Narendra Modi informed of the Government’s decision to do so. In fact, Mizo student bodies expressed a desire to merge with hostile neighbor China rather than stay in an India where the Bill becomes a reality.

After Mizoram, Barak valley too wants to secede from India. People of Barak have raised cries of “India go back, China welcome” over fears of losing their ethnic identity if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is passed.

Manipuri Youth Front workers from Silchar have raised the demand this time around. A large protest was organized against the Bill by members of the Manipuri Youth Front. Many indigenous people joined hands against the Bill and were united in their cries of protest. “We will not accept this unconstitutional Bill”, the protestors shouted in unison. “We will give our blood, but we will not give up our land. We will protest until the Bill is scrapped. We will join China. China welcome, India go back”, stated a protestor.
