Indian Journalists' Union condemns attack on Assam journalist

New Delhi, April 28, 2019:

The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has condemned the attack on Rajib Bora, a journalist working for DY365 News Channel from Jorhat in the evening of April 27.

He was attacked by unidentified miscreants while he was returning home from his duty.

It is suspected that he was assaulted because of his election news coverage. IJU yesterday issued a statement condemning attacks on two journalists, including a woman in Nalbari and Tinsukia districts of Assam on April 26. IJU and it's affiliate in Assam, Journalists Union of Assam (JUA) has expressed grave concern at the continuous attacks on journalists because of their profession.

Further, the IJU has urged upon the government to ensure safety and security of journalists in the state and speed up investigations and punish the culprits.

In a statement undersigned by IJU President and a member of Press Council of India Amar Devulapally and Secretary General Sabina Inderjit, the IJU has asked the state government to take immediate action against such systematic attacks on journalists of the state and also ensure a free and fearless media environment in the state.
