A delegation of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) visited Assam and held a discussion with members of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on the proposed controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The discussion was headed by JD (U) chief KC Tyagi in presence of senior AGP leaders Atul Bora, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Keshav Mahanta as well as other members of the party.
Addressing the media, Tyagi assured his party has full support for the AGP’s stand against the Bill. He added, “If the rights of the people of Assam and North East have to be preserved, we have to oppose the Bill. We will oppose it in the upcoming Rajya Sabha session. The AASU, civil society and all other organizations are protesting against the Bill.”
It may be mentioned that JD (U) has made its stand clear against the Bill and supported the AGP since the past. It may also be mentioned that the AGP has parted ways with the BJP in the state.
The Citizenship Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha session on January 8 and is likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha session scheduled on January 30 of this year. However, protests have been staged against the Bill across the state by student bodies, civil societies, and general organizations since Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his announcement to amend the Bill on January 4.
