Guwahati: In a major development, Guwahati Police has arrested one more accused in the infamous Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) cheating scandal on Friday night.

The accused named Kakoli Bezbaruah was apprehended from Roopnagar in Guwahati.

The other five accused in the have been sent to judicial custody on Thursday. The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Guwahati also rejected the bail plea of the five accused.

Neel Nakshatra Das, the topper of JEE, his father, Dr Jyotirmoy Das, and three employees of a testing centre – Hamendra Nath Sarma, Pranjal Kalita and Hirulal Pathak – were arrested on October 29.

Neel Nakhashtra Das had a proxy candidate appear for his behalf at ION Digital Zone in Azara.

An FIR (first information report) has been registered with the Azara Police. The police investigation has revealed that a proxy was used by the candidate through the help of another agency.

The Officer-in-charge of Azara police station also said that the complainant Mitradev Sarmah has also provided electronic evidence against the student.

It has been alleged that the staff of the examination Centre was also involved in the incident. Police is said to be investigating all angles — there is even the whiff of a scam.

The examination centre has been sealed and the management has been summoned, police said.

The Assam Police have informed the National Testing Agency (NTA) about the incident.
