The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), constituted by the Central government to take the views of people on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, will meet at 2 pm in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is likely to oppose the bill. TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed the TDP MPs in the JPC to oppose the bill. Earlier, Naidu had assured a delegation of the All Assam Students’ Union in this regard.
The 30-member JPC will discuss at length the Citizenship Bill. Thirteen of the JPC members are from the BJP. BJP MP Rajendra Agarwal is the JPC chairman.
The Citizenship Bill seeks to legitimize the stay of non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who had migrated to India till December 31, 2014.
