GUWAHATI: Judima wine, the traditional wine of Assam has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. It is the first beverage from the Northeast to get this honour.
Judima wine is made from rice and a certain herb which is widely popular among the Dimasa tribals of the state.
Judima wine is the second GI-certified product from the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
The Assam Agricultural University (AAU) relied on historical backgrounds while documenting the drink prior to staking a claim for GI status. The varsity cooperated closely with the Dima Hasao district's Youth Association for Development and Empowerment (YADEM).
Ashok Bhattacharyya, AAU's director of research (agriculture), stated that the Chennai-based GI Registry announced Judima's award on its website.

YADEM and a women's organisation, Dimazik, earlier approached the AAU for help in promoting Judima and obtaining a GI tag for the drink.
It needs to be mentioned that Karbi Anglong's ginger was awarded GI tag back in 2017.
The matter was pursued by M Angamuthu, the then-district magistrate of Karbi Anglong, who is from Chennai.
