Golaghat, June 17, 2019:

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has staged a protest today in Assam's Golaghat district against the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project near the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh border.

Gogoi has sounded a battlecry and said that the construction of the dam shall not benefit Assam at any cost and urged the authorities to scrap this project. The peasant leader also warned that the construction of the dam would imperil the state.

Gogoi, along with his supporters, staged the protest near the DC office in Golaghat. In fact, KMSS workers are protesting the construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project in many places in the state.

Gogoi said that the project will not be allowed to proceed in Assam under any circumstances. He further added that the construction of the project had been met with widespread projects due to which it was stalled in 2011. Gogoi has said that this project will only benefit Arunachal Pradesh, while at the same time, it will hurt Assam.

It may be mentioned that Gogoi has been protesting against the project since the time it was conceptualized. In July 2015, the activist had gone on an indefinite hunger-strike in Guwahati.

He was demanding the release of 27 anti-dam protesters, arrested from Ghaghar Village in Lakhimpur district on May 11. They were planning to stop construction machinery from being transported to National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project site near the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh border, officials said.

Gogoi accused the state police and the central reserve police of “unleashing inhuman atrocities on our peaceful and democratic protesters”.
