Guwahati, December 17, 2019:

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has been brought to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Court in Guwahati city on Tuesday. Akhil was earlier flown into the city from Jorhat town for his trial in the wake of the Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

According to reports, both of the peasant leader's hands have been cuffed like a hardened criminal's, and speaking to reporters outside the Court, Gogoi claimed that the authorities have inflicted a "great deal of torture" on him.

Meanwhile, two other senior leaders of the peasant body -- Dhaijya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal -- have also been arrested from Guwahati.

Gogoi was arrested on Thursday for protesting against the legislation, which was passed in both Houses of Parliament earlier in the week and now, he has been booked under the amended Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

He was arrested on Thursday for staging a sit-in protest in front of the DC's office in Jorhat. It may be mentioned here that in the moments prior to Gogoi's arrest, a video, in which he was seen leading a sea of protesters with chants against the C(A)A, was going viral.

According to a report in The Print, Gogoi has been booked for “waging a war against the nation”, conspiracy and rioting.

Meanwhile, democratic and non-violent protests are continuing in carious districts of Assam, with many regional indigenous and student bodies are demanding the immediate scrapping of the controversial amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Amid the ruckus over the C(A)A the 3-day gana Satyagraha of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has entered its second day, with student leaders all over the state leading the charge against this Act.
