Guwahati, April 23, 2019:

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday waited in a queue for a long duration of time to cast his valuable vote at the polling booth in the Nizarapar LP School in Chandmari. After casting his ballot, Gogoi proclaimed that he had cast his vote against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Addressing media persons here, Gogoi said: “Our stand (regarding the Bill) is absolutely clear. We will continue to stand against the Bill. There is no country in the world which has passed such a law. This is the instance of a fundamentalist and a communal party leaving no stone unturned to grant citizenship to foreigners in our land.”

It may be recalled that Gogoi has been a prominent voice against the Bill as Gogoi's KMSS along with 70 other organizations launched protests against the Bill in many parts of Assam and also in New Delhi. It is generally believed that the Bill lapsed due to the sustained protests in all corners of the North-East.

Counting of votes will take place on 23 May.
