GUWAHATI: The Congress-led Mahajot (Grand Alliance) has written a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure compliance of model code of conduct (MCC) in the state by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Mahajot in the letter accused that the both are deliberately violating the MCC enforced in the state by ECI. It alleged that Sonowal had been visiting several districts such as Majuli, Nagaon etc, and held discussions with the officials of different departments on April 23 even though the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Assam government is just a care taker government at this moment.

The letter also mentioned Sarma, and minister of state for health Pijush Hazarika, of doing the same in Nagaon, Morigaon and Dima Hasao districts.

"This is not only violating the Model Code of Conduct of the Election Commission of India but also grossly violates the COVID Protocol," part of the letter read.

The Mahajot letter also rightly pointed out their long term fear, viz manipulation of the EVMs at the government offices. They stated in the letter that at a time when EVMs are kept in strong rooms at district and subdivisional headquarters, visit of CM or other ministers to such offices are really unwarranted or in a word they want it to be prohibited.
